PRE-ELECTION SEMINAR WILL BENEFIT PROSPECTIVE COUNCILLORS

Glen Innes Severn Council invites people, who are considering nominating as a candidate at the Local Government Elections in September, to attend a seminar in the Learning Centre Conference Room from 6.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. on Tuesday 22 July.

Mayor Steve Toms said that, at the June Council Meeting, Councillors had voted unanimously to arrange for Local Government Learning Solutions to conduct a Pre-election Seminar in Glen Innes. "The seminar includes an overview of Local Government in NSW, and outlines the roles and responsibilities of a Councillor," he said. "It also explains how the election process works. We hope that, by holding this seminar, we will attract high quality candidates for the election, which will be held on 13 September 2008."

Local Government Learning Solutions, which is the training section of the Local Government and Shires Association, coordinates relevant, high quality and cost effective training programs and seminars for councils in NSW. "I urge anyone who is thinking of nominating as a candidate at the Local Government Elections to attend the seminar," said General Manager, Hein Basson. "This is an excellent opportunity for prospective Councillors to find out more about Local Government. The seminar will outline Council responsibilities, services and functions, and provide information on Council meetings and Council Committees."

Cr Toms said the seminar would also discuss what life as a Councillor involved. "Topics will include managing time, fees and benefits, liability, disclosure of interests, and code of conduct," he explained. "Leadership, community consultation, accountability and Council Management Plans will also be covered."

Light refreshments will be available at the seminar. People who are interested in attending are asked to RSVP to Diana Graham on 6730 2319.

Prospective Councillors should also pick up a copy of the publication, Becoming a Councillor, from Council's Town Hall Office.
